Is My Baby Just A Cranky Little Twerp Or Does He Have Acid Reflux Disease?

There are about eight million babies born each year in the USA.

How many suffer from from gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD?

About 20% or or 1.6 million!

There has not been whole lot of research into baby reflux because the vomiting and crankiness exhibited by babies suffering acid reflux was written off to the natural state of new babies bringing up some food.

At the junction of the stomach and the esophagus is a small circular muscle called the sphincter which acts as a valve to stop stomach acid from flowing back up the esophageus.

When the sphincter does not work properly, stomach acid is allowed to flow back into the esophageus.

This causes the symptom commonly referred to as "heartburn".

In extreme cases the stomach fluids move into the throat and larynx and into the mouth.

The symptoms are varied from this bodily mechanical problem and lead to infections, pain, ulcers difficulties in eating, voice disorders and even cancer.

Is your baby just a cranky little twerp?
